The Botswana Optometrists Association (BOA) recently held its valedictory ceremony for the second batch of the MYGENE Dx Genetic Course. The event was a grand affair, conducted online, and witnessed by numerous dignitaries and participants from across the globe.
Program Highlights:
- National Anthems: The ceremony began with the national anthems of Botswana and India, setting a tone of unity and collaboration.
- Prayer: Optom. Dr. Hakeem Gyan Afful from the BOA Education Sub-Committee led the gathering in a short prayer, invoking blessings and gratitude.
- Welcome Remarks: Optom Seabelo Maje, the head of the BOA Education Sub Committee, extended a warm welcome to all attendees. He also introduced Prof. Dr. G. Kumaramanickavel, highlighting his significant contributions to the field.
- Course Introduction: Prof. Dr. G. Kumaramanickavel, the Director of MyGene Dx in India and a Visiting Associate at the Ophthalmic Genetics Branch, National Eye Institute, USA, provided an in-depth introduction to the course. The session also included introductions of the presidents of WCO, APCO, and AFCO by Optom Thato Nthula, the BOA Vice Chairperson.
- Global Remarks: The event was graced by remarks from global leaders in optometry:
- Assistant Prof. Optom Peter Hendicott, President of the World Council of Optometry.
- Optom. Dr. Rajeev Prasad, Board Member of the World Council of Optometry and President of the Asia Pacific Council of Optometry.
- Optom Frank Magupa, President of the African Council of Optometry.
- Optom (Dr.) Enowntai Nkongho Ayukotang from the Cameroon Optometrists Association, the President Elect of the African Council of Optometry.
- Sponsor’s Address: Dr. Costa Maonei, the Medical Head of Novartis-South Africa, which sponsored the BOA Genetic Course, shared his remarks, emphasizing the importance of continued education and collaboration.
- Testimonial: Optom Kabanani Modie, a course candidate, shared his enriching experience and the impact of the course on his professional journey.
- Guest of Honor Addresses:
- Dr. Tuelo Joseph Ntwaagae, the Honorary President of the Medical Practitioners Group & Health sector Chairperson of Business Botswana, was introduced by BOA Chairperson Optom Thanuja Panicker-Naicker.
- Optom. Dr. R. KrishnaKumar, the former Principal of Elite School of Optometry and a renowned Free Lance Optometrist from India, delivered an insightful address. He was introduced by Ms. Brinda Ramanathan.
- Certificate Distribution: The highlight of the event was the handover of certificates to the successful candidates, marking their accomplishment.
- Vote of Thanks: The ceremony concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Optom Kgosiemang Seboko from the Education Sub-committee, expressing gratitude to all participants, sponsors, and organizers.
The event was a testament to the commitment of BOA and its partners in advancing optometric education and fostering international collaboration. The MYGENE Dx Genetic Course, sponsored by Novartis, SA Division, has undoubtedly set a benchmark for future programs.
